Babies, Chiropractic & Health...

I had the honor of treating the child of a young man I was fortunate of helping to mentor a few years ago, who is now off and impacting the next generations. In the same morning I was able to examine and treat his two month old baby along with mom, dad who were all involved in an accident a week or so ago. It was an interesting experience and you take the pressure off the nervous system of one who has only a small amount of experiences and able to improve their lives today and potentially for a lifetime. It's interesting what we do and say today, how it will affect people to depths we may never know.

I meet with a group of guys for breakfast every Wednesday morning, many of which are pastors some young, some retired. I look up to everyone of these guys and admire their character and wisdom and the families they have produced and got a little taken back today. I had the eldest and retired pastor tell me of how, in me introducing him to a concept of making markers through life for young men so they have rights of passage to manhood, he has passed it onto another father he meets with and how this concept has brought healing and reconciliation to a strained father-son relationship. I obviously take absolutely no credit for this, but it does bring this to a point I hope we can focus on today and the days going forward.

Let me tell you about the starfish story. There was a man walking along the beach in the early morning hours and in the distance he saw a shape of what looked like someone dancing on the beach. as he approached closer he noticed that it was a boy flinging starfish out in to the ocean. When he looked around he saw litteraly hundreds of starfish that had washed up on the shore from the evening's high tide. He went to the boy and and said, 'Son what are you doing, there is no way you can possible to save all of these starfish.' The boy responded, 'That doesn't really matter, but it does matter to this one.' as he took the starfish in his hand and flung in out in to the ocean.

Let me paraphrase a famous poem written by Dr. Palmer 'The biggness of the fellow within': We remove the pressure off the nerve of a baby, their heart, lungs, stomach, etc. will work better, you multiply that by time and we have potentially years without so many of the ailments, disorders, etc. which plague our society today. Then multiply that baby by the millions of babies born every day, and now you can positively affect the well-being of a generation. Now let's look at the ripple effect, caring for sick kids is so amazingly hard on parents, marriages and other relationships. You help restore health to a sick or prevent a sickness in a child, you positively affect men and women to not have so much strife in their homes, and you may just maybe, even if it is only one, saved a marriage or a future.

I recall a story involving a mom of two teenage boys who had gone to four medical doctors, three chiropractors, half a dozen therapist and still suffered with almost constant migraine headaches. She came in with a large stack of notes and told me this was her records and in there was all I needed to know to help her. I politely slid the stack to the side, and said, 'Isn't this a stack of all that didn't work? How about we take a fresh approach and look for the cause of this ailment?' I have to admit, I wanted to look at the stack to see if the easy answer might just be there, but I contended to give the best, expect the best and let the chips fall where they may. Within a few weeks she was completely headache free and she referred to our clinic her son, Steven. After one of his adjustments, he stopped me at the door, and said, 'Hey Dr. Busch, I want to say Thanks.' I said, 'No problem, that is what we are here for,' and proceeded to the door. He put his foot up to the door to keep it closed and with tears welling up in his eyes, he said, 'No Dr. Busch, thank you for giving us our mom back. For the many years we've had to miss out on going places and doing things due to mom having to sleep in a dark room. She came to my entire soccer game yesterday and I got my mom back, so really, Thank You!' Was that problem corrected a small thing worth only a couple bucks to most insurance companies, who see us a cattle to me managed? I contend it gave back that family health and hope for the future.

Make a difference in the world around you, look past your hurts, frustrations and anxieties and touch people's lives with the hope that comes truly only from Jesus & health that is not about managing symptoms, but correcting the cause and you too can change the world!

Until next time...

Hyperactive lookin' at Autism...

I read an article from Sciencedaily.com that tells of a collaborative study between the CDC a public school system and the University of Alabama, which shows that Autism is now up to one percent of the 8 year old boys in America. This gets me somewhat alarmed as I have an 8 year old boy in my very home and not one percent, but one-hundred percent of his life is subject to my responsibility, care and understanding the risks that he will encounter for the the next 10 or so until, he transitions into be a self-sustaining adult. I have a strong empathy for families who have autistic children as I know of how much this raises the compassion factor in the home, but also drains the energy from the home at times. I was a very hyperactive child and my parents had no idea on how to handle me and it wasn't until a couple whom I now call 'Aunt & Uncle' stepped in and cared enough to intervene; and to them I am forever grateful and indebted to them. Parents need help, they need resources of information and they don't need judgment or criticism.

There is no way that we would know that the red hot stove would potentially harm our hand permanently by placing our hand on it, if it wasn't for someone who had already learned that lesson and taught it to us and then kept and eye on us to ensure we heeded their warning. Once a family is blessed with a Autistic child, and I have had many parents of them and treated quite a few autistic children over the years, you can't go back and you have to push ahead with 110% commitment to making a wonderful life for this kid and the past is water under the bridge and beating yourself up over what we should have, could have done will cause emotional harm and when you are done, you are right back where you are and still have to go forward.

There is and has been documented on multiple studies a connection between inoculations and starting of autistic symptoms, do they by themselves cause them? do they trigger something buried in the brain? is it just a random coincidence? (Little tidbit about reading research, look who paid for the study the outcomes and conclusions will almost always be to their advantange) I'd have to doubt the last is in error, but can not say with absolute certainty to exactly how for the former, but every case I've treated or parent knows there is a connection between the two. I have a old friend that has the honor of raising a autistic child and has shared with me that he knows there is a connection, but being he is a medical doctor, drugs and drug companies are his bread and butter, so can't bite the hand that helps feed you. So what is the solution? Take a careful logical look the the use of inoculations for children and not get pressured by the emotional arguments of nurses and doctors who want to scare or force you, instead of use logic and common sense. If you feel they are safe enough then go for it, if you have doubts, take the time to think, pray, etc. it over until you are comfortable with your decision. There are thousands and thousands of children who have never had an inoculation and are some of the healthiest kids on the planet, and kids that have had the whole gamut of shots with no problems, and then we are back to those whose life is radically changed by a seemingly harmless prick of a needle.

Let me take you on a little journey, a journey inside the mind, simply a trip through the synapses that make us who we are. This is going to be simplistic, but I hope effective. We have multiple types of nerves, two major ones are efferent and the other afferent. Afferent are incoming from stimulus outside the brain and messengers of the world or where the body is or the state of a organ or system. The efferent nerves in essence are taking information from the brain and taking it into motion, organ function, hormone control, etc. So picture the brain like a mayor's office with people bringing messages about the weather, school students, roadways, labor unions, store openings, and now multiply this by millions. Now sit behind the desk and now try to have an appropriate reaction to each of these, maybe a nod, maybe a invasive action, etc. Now that is our perfect world, and now picture, that either or both of the following. The information coming is mis-reported, exaggerated, stifled or just wrong, now try to make the appropriate decisions. Or lets say you have a right hand person that is to carry out your orders, but is either a bubbling idiot or tells others a yes to your no, an on to your off, and so you can imagine the chaos. (I know a lot of government jokes are now going through your head, but focus) This is the world of a child that has their properly functioning nervous system at birth, get radically changed and has to try to make sense of the world that is radically altered and has to attempt to re-learn, and often with out help. Thank God that kids are given loving moms and dads that protect them their whole life if necessary.

Now back to reality, if you know a family with an autistic child, find what you can do to help them, and get them connected with this blog site or our clinic. If you don't, make it a daily prayer for the kids and parents in this families and seek opportunities to help organizations designed as support to these kids. Keep your 'feelers' up as there are many organizations that are great, but there are a few that are largely funded by pharmaceutical companies (which in face value are not bad or evil as the media makes them out to be, they want to sell drugs, duh!) and are flooding parents with new drug therapies as the only rescue, which we will put in future blogs of some more effective treatments.

Until next time...

Gratitude - a Healing Art

I was witness to an amazing selfless act in someone taking time away from their kids and through blood, sweat, & money made an amazing transformation in person's house who is constantly complaining of how they can't take care of the overwhelming responsibilities they have. After seeing the end of this ordeal, I was shocked to the lack of gratitude poured out for the giver.

There is a physiologic response that happens in the body when we give the gratitude and appreciation to others. We are designed to be a social being and gratitude is currency in this society. Most the time, we've replaced this with cash or entitlement, neither of which can hold up to the act and expression of true gratitude for others. We fear rejection, because back when the world was younger, humans lived in tribes and if one was rejected they would often be kicked out of the tribe and would have a hard time surviving. In today's society, we assume, because we pay taxes, pay for our own services, and our gifts, we don't need to be grateful as we provided these things for ourselves with a swipe of our card. Cost is what we spend, Value is what we get and we assume they are equal. Nothing could be farther from the truth, if it wasn't for the hours of volunteerism, the cost would be enormous in almost all venues. I know I am often guilty of this not appreciating my wife for all she does for me and our four kids and then on top of that she is always looking for opportunities to help others in addition to us. As on the other end, we have helped in changing the lives for the better of hundreds of patients over the years and I often curious to why there is only a small percentage of those whose lives were amazingly transformed took the time to say or write 'Thank you.'

Without the expression of gratitude, we will create a constant drawing on the emotional bank accounts we have with others. You know when you feel spited by someone else you don't really feel like giving them the benefit of the doubt, or definitely won't do a favor for them. That is in a nutshell why we either love or dread the Christmas season. We are either grateful that we were spared from the terrible future by a self-sacrificing God on our behalf and want to show that unconditional love to others OR we think of what we didn't get compared to others or some ancient wrong someone did and want to use it as a opportunity to somehow get back at God by being for a simple term, a Grinch. Even the Grinch turned around his heart when he saw the people he wronged give thanks to their maker for what they have, what they don't and not worry, but celebrate the love around them.

Let me challenge you and give you some suggestions. Think of one person who has in any way, big or small, has wronged you and write them a forgiveness letter. Even if you don't send it, better if you do, but if you don't read it then burn it. Choosing right then and there, we are releasing that person from the jail we have put them in, that is of course only in our own mind. I guarantee you will have a freedom you've not recently experienced. Or maybe, find someone who you can see is struggling through their day and stop everything you are doing and offer to help them, open a door, carry the load, encourage them, do a task that is their responsibility for them, clean for them, cook for them, give them a hug, smile and tell them something amazing about them. It's not necessarily for them, but for you, as you do it once, it's like drug, you want it more and more, then you start to learn what it means to give, not to get, but just because....until next time, Merry Christmas!

What is Brain-based Therapy?

I recently had a patient offer up a testimony that has really gotten a lot of attention from other patients in the clinic. Let me share it with you:

"I came in due to lower back pain, hip and shoulder pain, but what I didn't realize was there was something that could be done for all the balance problems I have had for years. I couldn't get out of a chair or walk down the hall or even get out of bed, with out having terrible dizziness and a foggy feeling in my head. I can now get up and down, in and out of bed as my pain is gone, but even more my foggy head and balance is so much better. I'm now not going to sell my hog (Harley Davidson motorcycle) as my husband and I had resolved to do, but I am going to ride it and tell everyone about how Dr. Busch, Chiropractic and Brain-based therapy has given me my life back" - S.M.

Thank you to her, for such kind words, but it really reveals a hole in the most approaches to health care. Medicine may spend thousands of dollars to come up with a 'diagnosis' so they can fall back to either using a drug or a knife and treat nothing more than the effects or the symptoms. Others are so excited to treat a patient that you walk in and they by-pass all the investigation to treat what they assume is the problems. That's where we are quite different, and have a difference that shows.

First we take the time to sit down, do a thorough consultation and evaluation, run any tests needed, but then come up with a plan based on the source of the problems at hand, as everyone is different. Brain-based therapy takes the hundreds of hours of training in the neurological systems in the brain as well as the spinal cord and uses the problems that do commonly arise in the spine as a tool to stimulate the weak, dysfunctional or overactive parts of the brain. As a result for the first time the structure and the neurology is being used together and not as separate entities. Dizziness and Brain fog are just the tip of the ice burg, as we have had patients come in with everything from chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, migraine headaches, infertility, and irritable bowel syndrome and have seen amazing results.

I would love to help more people using this revolutionary treatment, but I can personally only help those you send to us. I can answer all kinds of questions and I am more than happy to do this, but until a complete structural and neurological evaluation is done, we don't know if this is for you. It has given back the life of so many is you or your loved one next?

Cold, but Pressing On!

I woke to -15 degrees this morning and it made me realize how many elements are daily attacking this amazing human body with which we have been gifted. Cold when it hits the nervous system has to respond by shunting blood to protect vital organs, especially to protect the brain & nervous system itself. This amazing body in it's attempt to create self-preservation stimulated my adrenal glands so I would have the proper 'attack' emotional response and press through to get to a place of warm as soon as possible or not get complacent in the elements and get nasty things like frostbite or worse.

All this while I just thought I wanted a warm cup of coffee or warmer socks. One of the elements I strive to teach students at CSU-Pueblo is that I can teach them the parts of anatomy or elements of health, but if they don't grasp a healthy respect and awe for this human frame, all the study in the world will be for naught. The 8+ million functions the nervous system does every day, the 41 enzymes produced in the liver per hour, the ability to touch, see (even the amazing functions there, we'll save that for another post), hear, speak, love and be loved. Wow, even after more than 20 years studying the human body, I am on a day like today still amazed and in awe of this amazing creation.

Keep warm, Be Positive & Love without Reservation!
